The Institute for Restoratione of the Opificio delle Pietre dure of Florence is restoring the Porta Nord (the Northern Gate) of the Baptistery. The restorators have just discovered that the bronze door, cast by Lorenzo Ghiberti at the beginning of Renaissance, is a guilded door as well as the most famous Gate of Paradise. Removing the dirty they have found out the guilding work on the relieves of the figures, on the heads of Profets and Sybills and on the naturalistic frieze while the background of the Formelle (panels) is plain bronze.
The bronze door was cast as soon as Ghiberti won the public competition in 1401. Visit Florence, reserve a private tour with your art expert and official guide of Florence!
