The Church of Ss. Apostoli in Florence is a very ancient church. Despite the legend tells it was founded by Charlemagne, the majority of scholars think it belongs to the XI century.
It worth while a stop to visit it and to appreciate the atmosphere of piece and meditation suggested by the simple,but superb romanesque style with the beautiful columns in green marble from Prato.
Among the important works and masterpieces we can mention the Eucaristic Tabernacle in white and blue terracotta by Andre della Robbia, the marble monumental grave of Oddone Altoviti by Benedetto da Rovezzano and the beautiful Allegory of Immaculate Conception by Giorgio Vasari (1541).
However the church is very famous also for the stones preserved in a small niche on the left-hand aisle .
According to the tradition the flint stones from the Holy Sepulcrum in Jerusalem, were brought to Florence by Pazzino de’ Pazzi when he was back from the First Crusade. Those stones are strongly connected to the rite of the fire of Easter, because with those stones they light the big holy Candle and then the Colombina (the fuse) for the Explosion of the Charriot on Easter day mass.
