Recently some scholars tried to explain why, when the Cathedral of Florence was built on the destroyed Santa Reparata, the name of the church was changed. They found documents regarding the cult of S.Jerome penitent. The saint, first traslator of the Bible in latin, was the patron of a company composed of rich and powerful families, among them Capponi, Albizzi, Pazzi Tornaquinci, Antinori, Davanzati, Strozzi and bishops and archbishops from Fiesole to Pisa.
The name Santa Maria del Fiore was not used for the first time for the Duomo of Florence, a monastery in Fiesole existed, tied to the Guild of the Wool, but it was imposed to the Cathedral of Florence by the city government in 1412 and this appears as the imposition of a political lobby of power.
