Since last November 6th the monumental Crucifix (4,60 x 3,70 mt / 12 x 9 feet) painted by Giotto for the Ognissanti Church in Florence was back to the church.
Originally placed on the iconostasi (the wall dividing churches once), the cross was kept for ages in the sacresty. Now after a long and difficult restoration made by the Opificio delle Pietre dure in Florence it was brought back to its splendour in a chapel in the transept protected by a gate. It was not easy finding the best location because of the weight : 450 kilos!
The very new technique of restoration has pointed out the incredible quality of the painting: showing wrinkles on the Virgin face and showing the body of Jesus Christ as a real body, with all the colors of death.
Ask your official local guide to show it during your guided tour in Florence!
