The American Cemetery of Florence is one of the 14 places in beyond the ocean countries chosen by the American Battle Monuments Commission to host the remains of soldiers died abroad. It is located in a place freely given by the Italian Government to the United States of America to bury some American soldiers of the 5th Army, died during the campaign of Italy between 1943 -1945. It was built since 1949, when the first bodies were buried here and it was completed in 1959. The architects from New York McKim, Mead and White were in charge of the project of the Cemetery, while the landscapist architects Clarke and Rapuano design the green areas. The 4,402 tombs are displayed in eight sections, each tomb shows a latin cross for Christian soldiers and a star of David for jewish ones. The Sacrary consists of two wings, forward the valley, which are connected by a wall decorated with pink granite of Baveno slabs. On these granite slabs there are 1,409 names showing their order, grade and State. Do choose to visit this place with your licensed guide of Florence
